The short version
How the combat level formula works
Two parts. A base everyone always has, plus whichever of your three attack styles is strongest. Only the best style counts: a level 90 Magic on a maxed melee account adds nothing.

How to check your combat level
- 1
Enter your combat stats
Type your Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Ranged, Magic, and Prayer levels. The combat level updates instantly as you type.
- 2
Or load them from the hiscores
Enter your OSRS username and pick a table: Deadman reads the live tournament hiscores during a DMM event, Main game reads the regular OSRS hiscores.
- 3
Read your level and bracket
The result shows your combat level, the exact unrounded value, which attack style the formula counted, and which Deadman bracket you sit in.
- 4
Plan your next level
The fastest-routes list shows the fewest levels in each skill that add +1 combat, so you can level toward or away from a bracket boundary on purpose.
What each skill adds to your combat level
Not all combat skills are equal. Defence, Hitpoints, and Prayer count no matter what you train; Attack and Strength only count while melee is your strongest style; Ranged and Magic only count while they are on top, but they climb almost 50% faster per level when they are. This table is the whole formula reduced to per-level weights:
| Skill | Adds per level | When it counts |
|---|---|---|
| +0.325 | Only while melee is your strongest style | |
| +0.325 | Only while melee is your strongest style | |
| +0.25 | Always | |
| +0.25 | Always | |
| +0.25 per 2 levels | Always, but odd levels add nothing | |
| +0.49 average | Only while ranged is your strongest style | |
| +0.49 average | Only while magic is your strongest style |
Two practical takeaways. First, a ranged or magic pure levels combat fastest of all builds: each Ranged level is worth roughly 0.49 combat when ranged leads, against 0.325 for a melee level. Second, Prayer is the stealth stat: it only ticks every second level, which is why pure builds park it on an even number and why the calculator sometimes shows Prayer as a surprisingly cheap route to +1.
Combat brackets in Deadman Mode
Deadman Mode protects lower-level players by splitting worlds into combat brackets: you can only fight people inside your own range. The permanent Deadman world uses the three brackets shown in the table above. During seasonal events the finale also splits into bracket worlds, so knowing exactly where your build sits, and how many levels you can gain before crossing a boundary, is a real strategic decision for pures and bracket campers. The exact seasonal ranges change per event; we update this page when the next Deadman is announced.

Combat level milestones
A handful of combat levels unlock things or close doors, so they are the numbers worth planning around with the calculator:
| Combat level | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| 3 | Every new account starts here |
| 20 | Mazchna assigns you Slayer tasks |
| 40 | Vannaka assigns you Slayer tasks |
| 70 | Chaeldar assigns you Slayer tasks |
| 75 | Konar unlocks, and the top of the low Deadman bracket (3 to 75) |
| 85 | Nieve unlocks, and the top of the mid Deadman bracket (76 to 85) |
| 100 | Duradel, the highest Slayer master (also needs 50 Slayer) |
| 126 | The maximum: level 99 in all seven combat skills |
The two bracket edges, 75 and 85, are the Deadman-specific ones. A build sitting at exactly 75 fights nobody above its own level on the permanent Deadman world, which is why bracket-capped builds aim to land on the boundary and then stop gaining combat entirely. Use the fastest-routes panel above in reverse: it tells you which skills you can no longer afford to train.
Combat level FAQ
How is combat level calculated in OSRS?+
The game takes a base from your defensive stats: (Defence + Hitpoints + half your Prayer level, rounded down) divided by 4. It then adds the strongest of your three attack styles: 13/40 of (Attack + Strength) for melee, or 13/40 of 1.5x Ranged or Magic (rounded down) for the other two. The final number is rounded down to give the level you see in game.
What is the max combat level in OSRS?+
126. It requires level 99 in all seven combat skills: Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Ranged, Magic, and Prayer. A brand new account starts at combat level 3.
Does Prayer affect combat level?+
Yes, but only every second level. The formula counts half your Prayer level rounded down, so going from 43 to 44 Prayer raises your combat value while 44 to 45 adds nothing. Pures traditionally stop at even Prayer milestones like 52 for this reason.
How do combat brackets work in Deadman Mode?+
On the permanent Deadman world (W345) players are split into three combat brackets: 3 to 75, 76 to 85, and 86 to 126. You can only attack and be attacked within your own bracket. Seasonal Deadman events also split their finales into separate bracket worlds, with ranges that vary per event.
Does Deadman Mode change the combat level formula?+
No. Deadman Mode accelerates XP rates and changes death mechanics, but combat level is calculated with exactly the same formula as the main game. That is why this one calculator covers both: the DMM layer is the bracket display and the tournament hiscores lookup.
Can I load my Deadman tournament stats?+
Yes. Set the lookup toggle to Deadman and enter your tournament display name, and the calculator pulls your seven combat skills from the official Deadman tournament hiscores. The same hiscores feed powers this site's live leaderboards, so the numbers match what the event tracker shows.
Why does another calculator give me a different combat level?+
Usually rounding. The official formula rounds down in three places: half of Prayer, the 1.5x Ranged and Magic terms, and the final total. Calculators that use pre-rounded decimals like 0.325 can drift off by one right at a level boundary. This calculator does the whole formula in exact integer steps, so it always matches the game.
